Seminarort: Erste Campus, Am Belvedere 1, 1100 Wien

Aims and content
Texts contain more than “pure” information ‒ they also include a shared shorthand of historical and cultural references, both conscious and unconscious. These expressions affect the way authors think, feel and convey their ideas, and how these are received by their readers.
German proverbs, images and quotations are particularly rich examples of such codes, and translators have to be able to handle them with assurance. What do these expressions mean and where do they come from? What do they convey between the lines or assume, and what may have got lost over time? Are there English matches or near-equivalents and if so, what is their context, scope and geographical reach? And what other strategies are available to translators ‒ when and how should they recreate, explain or omit such elements, for example?
This seminar examines common German proverbs, images and quotations, explaining their origins and current meanings and suggesting English-language equivalents or other ways of dealing with them. The examples used will be taken from a variety of text registers and domains, and participants are encouraged to submit their own terms and phrases for discussion up to two weeks in advance.
