Aims and content
Everybody is talking about sustainability, but what does this mean for us, both in general and as language professionals? How are climate change and global warming actually defined, what are decarbonization, ESG, greenwashing or blue hydrogen? When do we say “carbon” and when “CO2” in English, and what is the difference between “ecological” and “environmental”? Getting the basics straight will help us translate texts in this area with confidence and style.
This seminar starts with a brief, practical introduction to the topic of sustainability and to key concepts and initiatives. It then addresses common issues with English versions of German sustainability terms, and discusses core resources for translators. Finally, attendees will put their knowledge into practice with translation exercises based on different sustainability reporting texts.
Deliverables
At the end of this seminar, participants will
• Understand more about sustainability and associated core concepts
• Be aware of linguistic and other issues relating to English and German terms
• Have gained hands-on experience of translating core sustainability text types
• Know where to find key resources and how to use them with confidence in their work
Target group
The seminar is aimed at native and non-native translators, revisers and editors of English texts. It will be delivered in English.
