Aims and content
This seminar starts by briefly examining the rationale and objectives for, and history of, gender-inclusive language in general and in English in particular. It then looks at how this issue affects commercial translation and communications, and the linguistic, political and other limitations that occur in practice. Tips for corporate language policies in this area will also be provided, and specific German-to-English translation issues and UK/US English differences will be addressed.
Deliverables
At the end of this seminar, participants will
• Be familiar with the rationale for, and goals and history of, gender inclusiveness in language
• Be aware of key linguistic issues associated with this topic, particularly in English
• Be aware of key differences in and within UK and US usage
• Be sensitized to diverse and changing sensibilities in this area
• Understand the value of policies in this area, and how to create, implement and maintain them
Target group
The seminar is aimed at native and non-native translators, revisers and editors of English texts. It will be delivered in English.
