Aims

Target language skills are becoming increasingly vital for into-English translators as client familiarity of the language, and the use of translation technology, increase. Providing elegant English versions of German texts that avoid “translatorese” is a key way of differentiating ourselves. In addition, translating isn’t the whole story anymore – clients also need professional help with rewriting, revising and editing internal translations and “original English” texts. These trends demand an in-depth knowledge of good English style, target text conventions, monolingual and cross-language pitfalls, and editing skills.

Contents

These hands-on masterclasses complement the early "Translating in Style I English Writing and Editing Skills" seminar by taking a deeper and more practical dive into the subject.

For each session, participants will be asked to prepare a (shortish) set translation and edit texts in advance. The focus in Part One will be on more general reporting texts and on how to ensure gender-inclusive language. Part Two will look at more technical reporting texts and at translating “political” issues.

In line with the format, participants will get most from this masterclass if they actively prepare for and participate in it. As always, they are also invited to send in specific questions for discussion up to two weeks in advance.

Deliverables

At the end of this masterclass, participants will have

  • Translated, edited and discussed English reporting texts from a style perspective
  • Identified effective ways of obtaining high-quality results
  • Explored current trends and issues in English style and how to deal with them
  • Received a list of reference resources

Target group
The seminar is aimed at both native and non-native translators, revisers and editors of English texts. It will be delivered in English.
