Translating in Style II - English Writing Masterclass

Target language skills are becoming increasingly vital for into-English translators as client familiarity of the language, and the use of translation technology, increase. Providing elegant English versions of German texts that avoid “translatorese” is a key way of differentiating ourselves. In addition, translating isn’t the whole story any more – clients also need professional help with rewriting, revising and editing internal translations and “original English” texts. These trends demand an in-depth knowledge of good English style, target text conventions, monolingual and cross-language pitfalls, and editing skills.
This hands-on masterclass complements Part I of the Translating in Style seminars for Camels, “English writing and editing skills”, by taking a deeper dive into the subject. Participants will be asked to prepare (shortish) set translations and to edit texts in advance. These pieces will be drawn from a variety of corporate and financial contexts familiar to many translators. Adopting this approach will allow them to polish their answers and identify specific areas of uncertainty at their leisure. Success factors, potential solutions and underlying issues will then be discussed in class, and principles and pitfalls examined. In addition, we will look at trends and frontier issues in German-to-English style such as gender neutrality, plain language, and culturally, historically and politically sensitive terms.
In line with the format, participants will get most from this masterclass if they actively prepare for and participate in it. As always, they are also invited to send in specific questions for discussion up to two weeks in advance.
At the end of this masterclass, participants will have
- Built a shared body of best-practice examples
- Identified effective ways of obtaining high-quality results
- Gained an overview of current trends and issues in English style
- Received a list of reference resources
The seminar is aimed at native and non-native translators, revisers and editors of English texts in cross-language environments. It will be delivered in English.
